Heat practice questions with answers pdf for CBSE class 7

1. Ice cream and Tea, both are your favourite. Well, have you ever wondered why you feel hot when you sip a cup of tea and you feel cold when you eat ice cream? What is the reason for your different feelings?

  1. Both have the same temperature
  2. Both have different amounts of heat energy
  3. Both have different temperatures
  4. Both have the same amount of heat energy

Answer: (c) Both have different temperatures.

Listen, we feel so different because of the difference in temperature between the two objects. The higher the temperature difference between two objects, the more heat energy will always flow towards the lower temperature object. So, try to understand that when you are sipping a cup of Tea, the temperature of the cup of Tea is higher than your body temperature, so heat energy is entering your body from the cup of Tea, so you feel hot. When you are eating ice cream, heat energy flows from your body towards the ice cream, so you feel cold.

2. Rahul and Anwesha are debating among themselves. Rahul says that only if there is a difference in heat energy between the two objects, the flow of heat energy will occur between them. How accurate is Rahul’s argument here?

  1. Rahul is right.
  2. Rahul’s argument is incorrect because the difference in temperature between the two objects is the main cause of the flow of heat energy.
  3. There is no difference between heat and temperature.
  4. None of the above.

Answer: (B) Rahul’s argument is completely wrong here because whether an object is hot or cold determines the object’s temperature. Temperature is not only dependent on the internal heat energy of an object. The temperature depends on the object’s size, the object’s specific heat, and the object’s mass. So, the temperature is the main cause of the heat energy flow.

3. Well, if you have a fever, your mother must use a thermometer to measure your body temperature. What is the function of this thermometer?

A. Here, the thermometer measures the temperature of your body.

B. Here, the thermometer measures the heat energy of your body.

C. Both are true.

D. None of the above

Answer: (A) We already know that what we call hot and cold depends on the temperature. The instrument used to measure this temperature is called a thermometer. Using this thermometer, we can accurately measure the temperature of any hot or cold object. However, we use different thermometers to measure the temperature of different objects. There are two types of thermometers. The first is the clinical thermometer, and the second is the laboratory thermometer.

4. We know that thermometers are basically of two types: clinical and laboratory thermometers. But do you know when and why laboratory thermometers are used?

A. Both clinical and laboratory thermometers are the same.

B. Clinical thermometer used for measuring high temperature.

C. Laboratory thermometer used for measuring body temperature.

D. None of the above

Answer: D. None of the above. Suppose you are measuring your body temperature. The human body temperature is comparatively much lower, and the range of temperature change is also much lower. So, we use clinical thermometers to measure body temperature. Clinical thermometers typically measure temperatures from 35 degrees to 42 degrees. But if you want to measure the temperature of hot water, its value is much higher, and the temperature changes faster. In this case, we use laboratory thermometers.

5. If you ever go to the doctor’s chambers, you will notice that thermometers are always cleaned with a sanitiser while measuring the temperature of each patient, but why is this done?

A. Just for Fun

B. So that the germs cannot easily pass from one patient to another.

C. This is just a formality.

D. None of the above.

Answer. (B) The precautions we should take when using a thermometer-

  1. Before using a thermometer, we should always check the temperature reading of the thermometer so that it is lower than our normal body temperature.
  2. When using a thermometer, we need to ensure that it does not hit any solid object.
  3. While talking the reading of the thermometer, we should always place the shiny mercury-containing part in front of the light.
  4. The thermometer should always be cleaned with an antiseptic solution so that the germs cannot easily pass from one patient to another.

6. Well, if you touch your friends’ bodies, you will notice that some of your friend’s bodies are hot and some of them are cold. But none of you has a fever. Then why is there such a distinct feeling?

A. Every one of us has a slight difference in body temperature, and it’s normal

B. Every one of us has an exactly equal body temperature.

C. It’s not normal.

D. None of the above

Answer. (A) Listen, every one of us has a slight difference in body temperature; it’s all normal. The value of our body temperature depends on our B.M.R rate and what we are doing. However, this difference is only a few degrees. The average temperature of the human body is 98.6 F. The average temperature in the human body is more than 35 degrees Celsius and less than 42 degrees Celsius. This is why we have designed the Clinical Thermometer in this range.

7. When I was younger, out of curiosity, I plunged my home thermometer into hot Tea. Immediately it exploded loudly. My mother became very angry, but later my father explained the scientific reason. Can anyone tell me why a clinical thermometer should not use to measure the temperature of a very hot object?

A. Clinical thermometer explodes sometimes. It’s Normal.

B. Clinical thermometers are designed to measure only body temperature.

C. Both A and B are True

D. Both A and B are False

Answer: B. Listen, clinical thermometers are designed to determine human body temperature only. It can only measure temperatures accurately from 35 degrees to 42 degrees. So, if we use it to measure the temperature of a hot drink or hot object, the mercury in the thermometer will expand very fast, which will create extra pressure inside the thermometer. And after a while, the thermometer will explode loudly. We have already made laboratory thermometers to determine the temperature of such objects.

8. You must have done a lot of experiments on temperature measurement in your school laboratory. When you measure the temperature of a hot object, you use a thermometer bigger than our home thermometer. What is the maximum and minimum temperature that such a thermometer can measure?

A. 0 degrees to 100 degrees centigrade.

B. -10 degrees to 110 degrees centigrade

C. 32 degrees to 212 degrees centigrade

D. 0 degrees to 273 degrees centigrade

Answer. B.  Look, thermometers used in our home and school laboratories are completely different. Only body temperature can be measured with our home thermometer. But with the school laboratory thermometer, we can measure the temperature of any hot and cold object. This type of thermometer is called a laboratory thermometer. With a laboratory thermometer, we can accurately measure any temperature from -10 degrees to 110 degrees centigrade.

9. One day, Rahul brought a thermometer near a hot object and noticed that the shiny mercury level in the thermometer was gradually increasing. Have you ever wondered why a layer of glossy mercury fluctuates when a thermometer touches a hot or cold object? Is there any scientific explanation behind this?

A. Mercury is contracting inside the tube.

B. Mercury is expanding inside the tube.

C. Both A and B can happen

D. None of the above

Answer: C. The answer I am telling you is, listen, the name of the bright shiny substance in the thermometer is mercury. If we apply heat to this mercury, its volume increases, and when it cools, its volume decreases. But since the mercury in the thermometer is confined to a glass tube, the mercury extends along the length of the mercury layer inside the thermometer as the thermometer is moved to a warmer object. When the thermometer is re-cooled, the volume of mercury decreases, and the length shrinks. That is why the mercury level inside the thermometer fluctuates as the temperature changes.

10. Samantha measured the temperature of the hot water with a thermometer. When she picked up the thermometer from the hot water, the reading of the thermometer began to decrease. But when we measure the fever in a clinical thermometer, why is the thermometer reading fixed without decreasing?

A. This is an error thermometer.

B.  There is a kink near the bulb of a clinical thermometer.

C. This information is not true.

D. None of the above.

Answer: B. If you look closely, you will see there are many structural differences between a clinical thermometer and a laboratory thermometer. At the beginning of the clinical thermometer is a small bulb-like part that holds the mercury column in place. This section is known as Kink.

11. One day, Ranita begged her mother to buy her a plastic pan, and she will cook in it. Is it possible to cook according to this demand of Ranita?

A. Yes, Possible

B. No, Impossible

C. Can’t Say anything

D. None of the above.

Answer: B. No, Impossible. Ranita will never be able to fulfil her expectations because the matter is usually of two types, good conductors of heat and bad heat conductors of heat. Since plastics are a bad conductor of heat, food kept in plastic containers will never get hot and easily burn as it is a bad conductor of heat.

12. Ranita and Rahul, one of them have a wooden scale, and the other has a steel scale. Both of them kept their scales in the sun for some time. Which scale will get hotter at the same time?

A. Wooden scale

B. Steel scale

C. Both will acquire the same temperature.

D. None of the above

Answer: B. Of course, the steel scale will heat up much faster. This is because wood is a bad conductor of heat, and steel is a good conductor of heat. Heat is transported rapidly through the steel scale, so the steel scale heats up very fast.

13. One day, you went for a walk on Goa beach with your family. When you reach there, you see a strong wind blowing from the sea towards the land in the afternoon. What is the cause of such incidents?

A. The atmospheric pressure is higher at the seaside.

B. The atmospheric pressure is higher at the landside.

C. The atmospheric pressure is the same all over the area.

D. There is no particular direction of flowing of air.

Answer: A. The atmospheric pressure is higher at the seaside. We know that the sun’s heat causes the land to heat up faster than the oceans. As a result, the air adjacent to the land becomes warmer and lighter and moves upwards. As a result, the air pressure on the ground decreases. Then the air adjacent to the sea is relatively cool, and the air in that region is cool and heavy. That’s Why the air pressure is high. Therefore, there is a rapid flow of air in the afternoon from the high-pressure area adjacent to the sea towards the low-pressure area of the land. This type of wind is what we call sea breeze.

14. Shankar told his sir that he wanted to go to the artificial satellite and boil water. In any non-gravitational space, he wants to test the heat flow in the convection system. Is that possible?

A. The convection process can take place at zero gravity.

B. The Convection process does not take place at zero gravity.

C. The convection process is independent of gravity.

D. None of the above

Answer: B. The Convection process does not take place at zero gravity. We all know that gravity plays an important role in the conduction of heat. The mode of operation is that the particles of the medium themselves get heated and travel from the warmest region to the coldest region. After some time, the whole medium becomes heated. If there is no gravity, then this convection flow will not happen. So, where the gravitational force is zero, heat transfer by the convection method is impossible.

15. Rahul and Akash are two friends. On the coldest day of the year, between the two friends, Rahul is wearing a thin sweater over a few thin clothes. And Akash is wearing only one but relatively thick sweater. Who will feel hotter between Akash and Rahul?

A. Rahul will feel hotter.

B. Akash will feel hotter.

C. Both will feel the same.

D. Can’t say anything.

Answer. A. Rahul will feel hotter. Of course, here, Rahul has acted wisely. As a result of Rahul wearing some thin clothes inside the sweater, some air layer has been created between the sweater and the clothes. We know that air is a bad conductor of heat, so heat energy cannot easily escape from Rahul’s body. As a result, Rahul will feel relatively hotter than Akash.
